The date was January 26th 2009 and I was hastily studying for an exam on Social Influence the following day. I'd left all my studying to the last minute - as I always do - and was starting to feel slighlty desperate. In fact, I was feeling REALLY desperate.

About midday I decided to have a break and checked my email. As I was trawling through the incredible amount of junk in my inbox (I get about 200 emails per day!), something caught my eye.

It was a personalised email from one of the more high profile marketers in one of the niches I was working in. In fact, I'll tell you the niche. It was the "anti-aging" market. (I know, it's a strange niche for a 19 year old guy to be working in!). Anyway, this particular marketer had personally emailed me because he'd seen my sites and he had a proposal for me.

He'd recently started a $97 per month membership site and wanted me to be one of his JV partners. He was paying 50% commissions. ($48.50 per month).

I was quite surprised to receive this proposal as I only had a small list of around 2,000 in this market, but nonetheless I had a look at his membership site and his salesletter and decided it was a suitable fit for my subscribers.

I headed over to my Aweber account (my auto-responder) and crafted a short, simple promotion email.

I didn't use any special psychological tricks or triggers to make people buy. I don't really understand psychological triggers if I'm being honest. (Ironic that I was struggling to revise for an exam on Social Influence, don't you think?)

Anyway, I sent the email at about 12:30 to 2048 subscribers and went back to my revision, not really expecting any noticeable results.

What Happened Next Simply
Astounded Me

After sending my promotion I headed back to my revision. Four hours of sweating, panicking and a great deal of worry later, I gave up. I didn't understand, I couldn't do it, I was resigned to failure.

My girlfriend, Daisy, came over about five o'clock. We were sitting in my room, so I decided to turn on my laptop and check my emails. I thought maybe I'd have made a few sales. So, I said to Daisy - "I bet I've made a few hundred dollars in the last few hours".

In hindsight, I was being a massive show off - a perosnality trait I really don't like.

Anyway, she didn't believe me. She rarely does! :)

I logged into my Gmail account and scanned through my recent emails...

All of it was junk. I couldn't see one sale notification. Not one.

What was already a bad day had turned into a nightmare. My girlfriend found it hilarious! (Obviously she didn't realise I was going to buy her a present with my earnings :)

I was highly embarassed and incredibly dissapointed.

I thought perhaps there was just a small chance that maybe, just maybe, the marketer didn't notify affiliates of sales. It's rare that this is the case. It was only a slim hope.

So, I decided to log-in to my affiliate account.

What I Saw Was Simply Incredible

I'd sent the email out at 12:30. It was now 17:00 - just four and a half hours later and, to my astonishment, I'd made 19 sales.

For each sale I received a $48.50 commission. So, 19 sales resulted in $921.50.

How many 19 year old university students can say they earn over $900 in four hours? And remember this is monthly recurring income. I'm going to continue to receive these commissions for as long as my subscribers stay members.

And that's not all...
